The two crews who completed the 34 mile Waterside D kayak marathon on Sunday had the distinct feeling that the "D" represented the devil! Despite good weather and a following wind it was a long hard paddle with a tunnel and 35 portages.

England international dragon boaters Slasher Preston and Marco Lorenzi came 3rd in their senior K2 in a magnificent 4 hours 42 minutes. They missed second place by just 2 seconds, as Slasher put it, "By the end the Italian stallion was low on oats and every inch was a struggle."

Meanwhile veteran newcomer Robin Oakley, in his first K1 race, did a creditable 6 hours 22 minutes ahead of his schedule.

Once again two support crew turned out to drive the crews there , and then feed and water them on route, before driving them home. Real unsung heroes without whom the others couldn't compete. They were John Bennett, and Al (UnC) Farrance.

Hemel Hempstead Canoe Club www.hhcanoeclub.com welcomes all-comers from beginners to experienced paddlers (although under 14s must be accompanied by an adult). Club nights are Thursday evenings from 7pm, but members can often be found paddling or using the gym at other times throughout the week. Located at Nash Mills Recreation Centre, by Red Lion Lane. Membership is great value and allows use of the gym and to borrow craft and benefit from free advice from other members. During the summer term they will provide a low cost coaching session on Monday nights for beginners.
